Building Permit Process

Occupancy Permit
Your building permit states whether you require an Occupancy Permit OR a Certificate of Final Inspection. Outbuildings that required a building permit including decks, sheds, verandahs, garages and carports. An Occupancy Permit, also known as an Occupation Certificate, is a certificate we issue to indicate we're satisfied with the works and that we approve your building as being suitable to occupy from a health and safety perspective.
Certificate of Final Inspection
A Certificate of Final Inspection is a statutory document issued under the Building Act 1993. A Certificate of Final Inspection is issued for extensions or alterations to existing buildings (including homes) as well as other outbuildings that do not require an Occupancy Permit. The need for a Certificate of Final Inspection will be indicated on your Building Permit.
Building Permit FAQs
Building permits are usually issued within 5 working days for small projects and within 10 working days for large projects. Very large or complex jobs may take longer than this, in which case the Surveyor will notify you and do their best to work within the timeframe given. Building Surveyors evaluate and assess plans, conduct inspections and issue Building Permits.
Shed Permits
As required with any building structure, constructing a shed or garage may also require a permit. There are specific standards of safety that must be met when any building is constructed. Indifferent to the construction of any other building in Victoria, the construction of a shed or garage will often also require a building permit.
Deck Permit
There is a common misconception in the wider community that you do not need a Building Permit to construct a deck. This, however, is not always the case and we strongly recommend you contact one of our friendly team members for further advice and clarification. Height and overlooking are key considerations when assessing whether a deck complies with the Building Regulations.
